Kenyan Protest Clashes Leave Multiple Dead and Injured

Recent protests in Kenya have escalated into violent clashes between police and demonstrators across Nairobi and other cities. Authorities report at least 8 fatalities and over 400 injuries, including gunshot wounds, according to doctors and rights organizations.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds demanding President William Ruto’s resignation, while some stations were temporarily shut down after government bans on live broadcasting of the protests. A High Court ruling later mandated the restoration of TV coverage, condemning the government’s censorship.

Protesters also protested issues such as police brutality, enforced disappearances, and government corruption. Several incidents were reported, including the death of a security guard, armed men attacking protesters, and the dragging of wildlife sculptures from a public park to the streets by unknown individuals. The government urged calm and emphasized that the protests should not threaten national peace, while the Kenya Editors’ Guild condemned the broadcast bans, asserting the importance of media coverage for accountability.
