Meta Introduces AI-Powered Message Summaries in WhatsApp
Meta announced the rollout of an innovative AI-driven feature for WhatsApp, enabling users to receive summaries of unread messages within a chat. This new option leverages Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring message privacy and encryption remain intact, as the AI processes data without accessing message content directly.
The summaries are visible only to the individual user and do not appear in the chat for others. Initially launching in the U.S. with support for English, the feature allows users to turn it on or off via Settings > Chats > Private Processing. It will expand to more countries and languages later this year. The update builds on Meta’s AI advancements released in April, designed to provide helpful functionalities without compromising user privacy.
Meta explained that the technology uses a secure, private processing method so that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see message contents during summary generation. This ensures the confidentiality of conversations while offering convenient message management. The feature is disabled by default but indicated by a small icon when available.
This enhancement aims to streamline message review, saving users time and improving messaging efficiency. The AI-powered summaries are part of Meta’s broader efforts to enhance user experience through privacy-preserving AI innovations.
