Squid Game Creator Teases Potential Spinoff Series Idea

Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed that he is considering developing a spinoff series set within the universe of Squid Game. However, he emphasizes that it would not be a direct sequel. Hwang explained that he has envisioned exploring the three-year period between the first and second seasons, focusing on what the recruiters, Captain Park, and masked men were doing outside the game environment during that time.
This idea aims to portray their lives off-screen and could be developed into a future project. Regarding the storyline of Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, the creator assures that all storylines will be resolved by the end of season 3, although he hasn't disclosed Gi-hun's ultimate fate.
Hwang also mentioned that, despite the emotional and physical toll—having lost a total of ten teeth while filming both seasons—that returning to the series universe was challenging, but he feels the storyline and universe are now fully realized. The final season of Squid Game is scheduled to premiere on Netflix, bringing the story towards its conclusion, but the creator left open the possibility of further spinoffs or sequels in the future.
